End of the season at Governors Island
Last Sunday, October 10, was the last day this year for public access to Governors Island. From now until next summer, I’ll be able to do no more than gaze on it from the Brooklyn Bridge.
It was a busy day on the island, with picnickers and Frisbee players and a few people learning to swing on the trapeze. And as a kind of last-minute gift, the chapel of St. Cornelius the Centurion was standing open and I got to walk inside and inspect the stained glass. The gate to Yankee Pier was unlocked too, so you could walk out to the end and get a better view of Buttermilk Channel.
