“Everyone knows that Thoreau is at or near the top of the list of American thinkers
and writers. But as this lovely volume reminds us, he was also a world-class noticer,
a remarkable and original observer of all things natural.”
— Bill McKibben, author of Deep Economy
“Geoff Wisner's Thoreau's Animals gives the reader the opportunity
to approach the animals of Thoreau's Concord as Thoreau would: from unexpected angles,
from a different view, unhurriedly, with deliberation and sympathy.”
— Jeffrey Cramer, editor of Walden: A Fully Annotated Edition
What's Happening —
My latest book, George Templeton Strong: Civil War Diaries, was published in January 2026 by Library of America.
I was delighted to talk about it with Kate Culkin for the Victorian Society and with Brenda Wineapple for Library of America. Civil War Diaries has been reviewed by The Baffler and by the Wall Street Journal, which gave it front-page coverage in its book section.
Now in development: The Forest Floor: Ferns, Fungi, Lichens, and Mosses in the Journal of Henry David Thoreau, with a foreword by Lawrence Millman and illustrations by Will Close. Stay tuned!
